PREPARING FOR "THE BIG ONE"

Recent research has confirmed that the Oregon Coast is subject to a significant risk of large earthquakes associated with what is known as the Cascadia subduction zone. Such an earthquake will cause extensive damage. These earthquakes can generate tsunamis that will inundate low lying areas requiring evacuation to higher ground. The earthquake and subsequent tsunami that occurred in Japan in 2011 was caused by a subduction zone earthquake similar to one that might occur off the Oregon Coast. The amount of damage an earthquake causes depends on many factors, but there is much one can do to reduce the likelihood of serious injury, loss of life, and damage to the home, as well as make recovery easier after the earthquake.

I'm a retired seismologist/geophysicist and I live on the Oregon Coast because I believe it is the most beautiful place in the United States.  But I'm keenly aware of the impact that a mega earthquake and tsunami will cause to our coastal communities.  So I've done what I can to prepare and am spending much of my retirement helping others to prepare.  This website is a collection of resources that I have found useful during my preparation.

What makes this website special?

So why do we need yet one more website on emergency preparation?  Many websites will tell you what you should do and how to prepare.  But when you do a search for recommended supplies, you can find a vast number of devices and tools that claim to work but, in truth, are just plain junk.  Unlike other websites, if I have found a device or tool that works and is helpful, I provide a direct link to where you can purchase it.   So you do not have to do the search yourself.   And, no, I don't receive any money  from the vendors that I recommend.  I only share the tools or devices that I use in my own home.

What to do BEFORE, DURING, and AFTER an earthquake
